Santiago Forero (Bogotá, Columbia, 1979-)

In his Mexican American Gothic series, Forero places the images of Mexican immigrants into the visual language found in Western Art. Forero’s reimaging of Art history includes Latinx, immigrant, and labor experiences. The undervalued importance immigrant labor, religion, and culture transforms the contributions to America of earlier venerated cultural producers and the subjects of their portraits. Forero’s vivid use of color draws the viewer in while his use of the media of portrait photography provides an instant recognition and human connection.
